A couple and an umbrella

ISO 250 | 1/1250 | f2.8

I learned that sometimes props can be a bad thing. I went with my sis and her family to a beach armed with some huge balloons and umbrellas to use as props. They were more of a distraction than anything else. The balloons were a pain to blow up and keep under control. The umbrella was nice to have, but it was hard to think of any cool poses to do. I guess it wasn't a big deal, but I think next time, I'll keep it to a minimum. I also learned (or realized), that every idea and thought I have in my head about poses and looks goes out the door every single time I'm actually doing a photoshoot! Maybe I need to write down ideas rather than try to remember what I saw on pinterest. Critiques welcome, thank you.

I shared what I learned on Click it up a notch! Check it out and share what you learned!

Wow! That photo is breathtaking! I think all those props were worth it just for that one photo! Just beautiful. But I hear you on poses and ideas going out the window on shoots. I've thought about making a small sketch book with my ideas. Or I believe that pinterest has got a app now for the iphone if you have one. But wonderful job on this photo! :)

So beautiful. I LOVE the parasol-silhouette idea. I totally meant to practice on my sister's family when we visited for Christmas, but it was too cold and cloudy in Virginia. I think if I could change one thing it would be the two-nose-and-pole meld going on--try to get a clearer silhouette. But maybe that's just my OCD side coming out.
I also love her white skirt coordinating with the parasol.
If we make it to Hawaii again, can my family book a session with you? :-)

This is fantastic. If I was Jennah I would be so smitten I would wanna print it on canvas and hang it on my walls!

I love this umbrella prop and the effect of it being translucent. To me, this is a great photo.

However, all that said - this photo is beautiful. Great use of the prop.

Very, nice capture! I too find myself forgetting those really cool ideas I saw elsewhere.

This is beautiful, love the light! I keep a notebook of ideas but I've never actually remembered to take it out with me.

Janell!!! Wow!! When I saw this I thought "I wish I had taken this"!! The sun and the shadows are perfect!! I don't know how you could have but if the pole wasn't in between them in the shadow it would help pull out their profiles. Maybe if the help the umbrella parallel to you. I think this is a fantastic use of the prop!! I have to agree that props can be more trouble than they are worth sometimes but NOT this time!! I hope they frame this one!! Great job!

This is an absolutely stunning picture!
I agree with the whole pinterest thing-- thankfully, I have the pinterest app on my phone, so I can refer to it while out, but, in the past, I have written down pose ideas on an index card, and kept it in my pocket. A few weeks ago, I had a photoshoot with 9 cousins, and they wanted shots of the cousins, each set of family members, girl shot, boy shot, and individual. I literally wrote out a "lesson plan" of how I wanted the shoot to go and followed it (guess its the teacher in me!) but it worked!
