What I learned | off camera flash

This week I learned how to use my flash off the camera. It was a cloudy dreary day out with not much natural light coming in the house so I took that opportunity to practice. I took this picture to show the setup: SB-600 off camera a little above us bounced to the white wall on the left. ISO 400 F4.5 1/10sec. Flash TTL. I don't even know if that is a correct setup.  I know this is just a baby step and I still have A LOT to learn about flash photography, especially metering with flash. It's so hard, I feel like i'm learning a whole new system. Anyway, how does this picture look with flash and converted to B&W?

I shared what I learned on Click it up a notch! What did you learn this week?

I think it looks awesome! No harsh shadows at all!
I'm a little afraid of my off camera flash and haven't really used it- maybe I should sit down and practice as well!

nice, I agree learning to use flash is like starting a whole different type of photography. I have yet to venture there. I'm still learning to just use the camera correctly.

Please continue to share with us as I know one day I'll take the step over.

Lighting IS hard. I have yet to get a good handle on it. You took a really nice shot. My only advice is to soften you and your son. There are some harsh lines. :)

I didn't know you could use the SB-600 off of the camera. Is there a site that you used to learn how to do that?

I think it looks great though. Wonderful job.

I have no idea what you're talking abt w all that flash business but it still looks great for the circumstances you listed! And Kainoa looks so happy!

I think that is a terrific for your first time! I just purchased a speedlite flash for my camera and like what I see so far. I've been reading my manual and hope to really delve into it this weekend. i think, metering is going to be a beast to learn though. :)

I think converting your photo to B&W hides any flaws. Great idea. If you cropped out the flash you wouldn't even know!

Oh, I mean to ask how did you trigger your flash and you just attach your flash to a tripod? Thanks!

Good for you for experimenting!! I only ever use my flash for indoor candids/documentary stuff. It is VERY complicated to me! :)
