Friday Photo Fun

This week I’ve been practicing on the kids a lot.  They have been really frustrating to take photos of lately, so I tried using the tips from Click it up a notch.  For this picture I used the 70-300mm and kept my distance; let Kainoa just play around while I snapped away.  Please critique, thanks in advance!  ISO 640, f/5.0, focal length 165mm, SS 1/400.  Flash not fired.  Manual, spot metered.  I purposely cut of his head (I personally like the look) but want to know if it just looks like bad composition.  Also, is it too bright?  I can’t tell on my monitor sometimes.  What I learned: I really like using the longer focal length for portrait shots, and it’s a lot easier if I just go with the flow and not worry too much about trying to get them to pose.

This is a fantastic shot!!!! I LOVE the bokeh and the lighting looks spot on as well. I honestly can't give any suggestions for improvements, it's perfect to me :)

I think this is fabulous! That is a good idea to keep your distance. I usually use my 35mm. I may have to try this. I think the lighting is great. His eyes are gorgeous. I like your composition. I may have to try cutting the top of his head off. I always try and get the whole thing in. Great work!

My "babies" are 28 and 27 years old. I have not photographed young children for many years. I wish digital camera were available when they were young.

What great photos all you young ladies have to treasure for years to come. (or tease them with when the first romances appear)

This being said, I do photograph my puppies and it is most likely the same in many aspects. They are in constance motion.

I, also, have found that by going with the flow and using a zoom, I have been able to capture some great shots.

I think you did a fabulous job with this photo. Your son is adorable. It might be a bit over exposured, and I do mean a little bit.

A blue ribbon photo.

I love the DOF!! Great job! I always cut my girls heads off. I prefer those too :O) It looks like you shot it in full sun which is super hard so well done! Unfortunately, on my screen at least, it looks like his cheeks and left ear are a little blown out. Just a smidge :O) Can't really control the sun though! Other then those spots, I don't think it is too bright, but I love bright photos! Also, I may have moved him a little bit to the right. I love the idea of doing portraits from a distance. I bet you were able to capture a lot more of their true personality. I will have to try that. I am impressed with the great eye contact! Well done!
