Shiro’s Saimin Haven

Today I met up with Jamie to have lunch at this place called Shiro’s Saimin Haven.  Been wanting to try it for a while; I read about it on Yelp and it just sounded yummy.  Jamie and I love Japanese ramen, and saimin is the local Hawaiian version of it.  One of my favorite places on Kauai is Hamura’s Saimin, it’s practically an institution.  So I had to see if this Shiro’s place was just as good.  It’s been in business for a long time, and is a diner type restaurant.  The big difference between this place and Hamura’s is the menu choices.  There are soooo many different types of saimin to choose from at Shiro’s.  From lumpia saimin to korean saimin,  wun tun min, even plate lunches.  It was so hard to choose.  Jamie got the mochiko chicken saimin and I got the mochi saimin.

-My bowl with char siu, napa cabbage, luncheon meat, wun tun and green onion and a glob of mochi in the middle.  Jamie’s was a typical wun tun min with a side of mochiko chicken.

Okay I gotta say this place was really good.  Really good.  I loved the mochi in mine, it was gooey and “mochi-ish”.  Jamie’s mochiko chicken was ono too.  But I thought the noodles were kinda gummy.  Broth was tasty.  Overall I’d say it’s good, but definitely not as good as Hamura’s.   Hamura’s also wins because it also serves chicken yakitori and lilikoi pie.
